2026 Jeep® Cherokee (KM) Drops More Camouflage

Hybrid Power and Classic Jeep DNA Come Together in This New SUV

After months of heavy camouflage testing in Metro Detroit, the upcoming 2026 Jeep® Cherokee (KM) is shedding more of its disguise, giving us the clearest look yet at its design. The latest prototype sightings confirm that the next-generation Cherokee is set to deliver a hybrid-only powertrain while staying true to Jeep’s legendary four-wheel-drive (4×4) DNA. With a more traditional SUV shape, advanced technology, and a spacious interior, the Cherokee is shaping up to be an exciting new addition to the lineup.

A Closer Look at the Cherokee’s New Design –

The new Cherokee shares some styling cues with the all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S but retains distinct features to set it apart. It keeps a fully functional seven-slot grille, which serves both as a recognizable design element and a necessity for increased airflow, given that this SUV won’t be an EV. The headlights have a sleeker, high-tech LED design, and the overall silhouette leans toward a more conventional SUV shape rather than the aggressive fastback look of the Wagoneer S.

Spy shots reveal a sculpted body with a wider stance, hinting at an increased size compared to the outgoing model. Unlike the Wagoneer S, which features a dramatic roof-mounted spoiler, the Cherokee opts for a more functional rear design, prioritizing cargo space over extreme aerodynamics.

Hybrid Powertrain Brings Efficiency and Performance –

Under the hood, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, manufactured at Michigan’s Dundee Engine Plant. This new powerplant will be paired with a three-speed hybrid transmission, marking the first time Jeep offers a hybrid-only vehicle in North America. While exact power figures remain under wraps, this setup is expected to provide a balance of fuel efficiency and capable performance, ensuring the Cherokee stays competitive in the growing hybrid SUV segment.

Trim Levels and Features –

According to our sources, the Cherokee will launch with three trims: Sport, Latitude (North in Canada), and Limited. A rugged off-road variant is expected for the 2027 model year, but at launch, all models will come with standard four-wheel drive (4×4). The range-topping Limited trim, shown in these spy photos, will showcase premium features such as 20-inch split 5-spoke wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and advanced driver assistance technologies, including Jeep’s hands-free STLA AutoDrive system.

Bigger and More Spacious –

Positioned as a D-segment SUV, the new Cherokee will sit between the Compass and Grand Cherokee in Jeep’s lineup. However, Jeep is slightly increasing its size, bringing it closer to the Wagoneer S. This growth translates to a roomier cabin, improved rear legroom, and expanded cargo space, making it a more practical option for families and adventurers alike.

Production Timeline and Market Focus –

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be built exclusively for North America, with no plans for global distribution. Production is expected to begin in Q3 2025, with deliveries starting by Q4 2025. This hybrid-only SUV comes at a time when consumers are shifting focus away from fully electric vehicles due to cost concerns, making it an attractive alternative for those seeking efficiency without sacrificing capability.

The Future of the Cherokee –

With its hybrid-only strategy, rugged design, and commitment to Jeep’s heritage, the all-new Cherokee is set to make a strong impact when it arrives next year. As Jeep continues to expand its lineup, the Cherokee remains a critical player, blending modern technology with off-road capability in a way that only Jeep can.

If they don't offer an ICE option without hybridization I won't be buying one. I have been waiting for the new Cherokee as a possible next vehicle. My wife and I have had 3 Jeeps since 1999, all new and are very pleased with them. We currently have a 2018 Grand Cherokee Limited and maybe we will just get another. Surely they won't alienate the majority of their market by offering hybrid only.

Keep in mind this is the D-Segment Cherokee, E-Segment Grand Cherokee will continue to have ICE power

Enjoyed your video on Mopar Junkie on this topic. Considering buying my third Cherokee, my wife loves them, but like others on this tread, if there is no ICE powered versions, I’m out.
I’m considering waiting on the next generation Grand Cherokee that currently has the excellent V-6 I love. If that option goes away, then it’s over for us and Jeep.
In my opinion the market demands ICE for every Jeep long term.

I'm really curious what the people in Auburn Hills will do to beef up the 1.6 for driving conditions in North America. I also would love to know the details on the 3-speed hybrid transmission. The Maverick hybrid with AWD uses a mechanical transfer transfer of power from the hybrid transmission. They don't use an e-axle like the RAV4 hybrid uses. I suspect Jeep will use a mechanical 4WD system as well, based on what was said in the video above.

We still don't know if the IC engine in the Jeep KM Cherokee will be North-South or transversely mounted. The front axle setback on the Wagoneer S looks like a front drive based design, but these spy photos for the KM Cherokee leave me guessing. I would guess the Recon is a front drive based design based on the proportions from the photos I've seen of that.
