2021 Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited 4xe Named Green SUV of the Year™:
New Hybrid Model Continues To Take In The Awards For Wrangler Nameplate...
The new electrified 2021 Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited lineup has been named Green SUV of the Year™ by Green Car Journal. The announcement was made during this past week’s virtual version of the Greenbuild Conference and Expo. It not only builds on the Wrangler’s new green initiative but continues the Wrangler’s award-winning ways before launching its newest and most technically advanced model yet.
Depending on the model and conditions, the new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe can deliver up to 25 miles of propulsion on electric power. The Wrangler’s new hybrid powertrain combines a high-tech, 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack, and unique TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. Torque from the electric motors in the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe arrives instantly on-demand from the driver, allowing for added capability in tough situations on the trail.
“The Wrangler 4xe delivers an exciting and environmentally positive way for Jeep fans to enjoy their on and off-road experiences,” said Ron Cogan, Editor & Publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “Its powerful plug-in hybrid power plant brings welcome performance while enabling up to 25 miles of trail or street driving exclusively on quiet, zero-emission battery power.”
According to Jeep, the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe models can achieve an estimated 50 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). With a combined 375 horsepower on tap from both the electric motors and the gasoline engine, the 4xe models are capable of a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.0 seconds.
Thanks to the new E-Selec modes, the driver can customize the 4xe’s powertrain for their trip with a push of the button located on the instrument panel. The three E-Selec modes are…
- Hybrid: The default mode blends torque from the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and electric motor. In this mode, the powertrain will use battery power first, then add in propulsion from the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine when the battery reaches minimum state of charge
- Electric: The powertrain operates on zero-emission electric power only until the battery reaches the minimum charge or the driver requests more torque (such as wide-open throttle), which engages the 2.0-liter engine
- eSave: Prioritizes propulsion from the 2.0-liter engine, saving the battery charge for later use, such as EV off-roading or urban areas where internal combustion propulsion is restricted. The driver can also choose between Battery Save and Battery Charge during eSave via the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect screen
All three models of the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe (4xe, Sahara 4xe, and Rubicon 4xe) still proudly wear the iconic “Trail Rated” badge. Wrangler Unlimited 4xe models all include solid front and rear axles, full-time 4×4 two-speed transfer case, fully articulating suspension, and can do 30-inches of water fording capability. What is even more incredible is that all Wrangler Unlimited 4xe E-Selec modes are available when the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe is shifted into 4Lo, creating an all-new level of off-road performance.
The all-new Wrangler Unlimited 4xe models will arrive in dealerships globally starting in the first quarter of 2021. Each 4xe model will be manufactured at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.
