The Plymouth Superbird, a specialized variant of the Road Runner, was designed as a follow-up to the Dodge Charger Daytona. Created specifically for the 1970 NASCAR season, it was built to meet the evolving demands of stock car racing. Its design aimed to improve aerodynamics and performance on the track, drawing heavily from the lessons learned with the Charger Daytona. The Superbird featured several distinct modifications, including a prominent front nosecone and a high-mounted rear wing, which were designed to enhance its aerodynamic profile.

This Superbird, with its factory V-code 440 6-BBL engine, boasts a matching numbers 7.2-liter (440 cubic-inch) V8 engine producing 390 horsepower. It is paired with a 727 automatic transmission, providing a smooth and reliable driving experience. The car retains its original sheet metal, and the exterior has been repainted once in its original Blue Fire (B5) paint color. The interior, mostly original, includes a bench seat and a black vinyl top, preserving much of the car’s classic appeal.

Additional features include power steering, power brakes, and a Firm Feel Stage 3 steering box. The car also comes with simulated fender-mounted air scoops and color-matched steel wheels fitted with radial tires. Notably, the VIN and fender tag are intact, along with two broadcast sheets, adding to its authenticity and provenance.

A Collectible Classic –

The Superbird is known not only for its distinctive aerodynamic features but also for its connection to the popular Looney Tunes character, the Road Runner. The car’s unique horn sound, mimicking the character’s “beep, beep,” and its graphic images were designed to appeal to fans and make a memorable impression on the track.

This Superbird’s competitors included the Ford Torino Talladega and the Mercury Cyclone, which were direct responses to the Mopar aero car. Speculation suggests that the production of the Superbird also aimed to attract NASCAR legend Richard Petty back to Plymouth.
