1968 Dodge HEMI® Charger R/T Heading to Mecum Kissimmee

A Rare, One-of-a-Kind Masterpiece with Unmatched Provenance...

The 1968 Dodge Charger remains a timeless icon of muscle car design, and the upcoming Mecum Kissimmee auction will showcase one of the rarest examples to grace the automotive world. This Charger is not just any R/T—it’s a HEMI®-powered masterpiece, representing one of only 264 HEMI Charger R/Ts built for the 1968 model year with an automatic transmission.

Legendary HEMI® Power Under the Hood –

Beneath its hood lies the original, numbers-matching 7.0-liter (426 cubic-inch) HEMI V8, rated at 425 horsepower and featuring dual 4-barrel carburetors. Enhanced with a Mopar Performance hydraulic camshaft, this engine is paired with the original A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission.

Striking Exterior in Dark Blue Metallic –

Adding to its uniqueness, this Charger was ordered without the Bumblebee stripe and painted in a striking Dark Blue Metallic (EE1)—the only known automatic example in this color. The exterior retains classic 1968 Charger styling cues, such as the inset grille with hidden headlights, turbine accents, a flip-open gas cap, and redline tires on 15-inch steel wheels.

Interior: A Luxurious Touch –

Inside, the Charger features a Black vinyl interior with a buddy seat/armrest setup instead of the more common center console. The Rallye dash includes a 150 MPH speedometer, rocker-type switches, a Tic-Toc-Tach, and an AM/8-track audio system—luxuries that elevated the car’s price when new.

Exceptional Provenance and Documentation –

This car’s provenance is exceptional, having been ordered new from Civic Center Dodge in Los Angeles. Its round chrome air cleaner bears the signatures of drag racing legends Don Garlits and Shirley Muldowney. Despite a cosmetic refresh in 1992, the original fender tag has never been removed, a testament to its authenticity. Included documentation, like the original Certicard, parts sheets, and a Dave Wise report, further cements its collector status.

A Rare Opportunity for Collectors –
